What Would Rox Do?

on May20 2008

Spring has officially arrived and with it comes long work days and virtually no weekends.  Being in the construction industry in Utah, the coming of Spring means that you work as many hours as possible during the non-snow months to make up for the lack of work during the winter.  With the birds, the flowers and the warm weather comes high stress, sleepless nights, and a never-ending stream of phone calls.

It is during this busy time that I often turn to Beach Walks With Rox to make my day just a little bit calmer Roxanne Darlingand a lot less stressed.  If you haven’t visited their site, you should.  Everyday Roxanne Darling (Barefoot Studios), in tow with her dog Lexie and her Secret Cameraman Shane, takes you on a short stroll along the beautiful beaches of Hawaii, all the while imparting her honest and profound wisdom with a zen-like quality.

Lately, I’ve been going through some personal family turmoil in addition to the stresses of work and I’ve found extra comfort in the Beach Walk episodes.  On a normal day I’ll correlate her topics with my job and think about how it can improve my workday.  However, because my personal life has been causing me more stress than my work life, I am noticing that her tidbits and advice, if you will, seem to transcend into all areas of life.  Not only are they making my workday more manageable, they are providing a daily escape for all my worries.

I had a good laugh while watching episode #637: How to Complain.  I really feel like I’ve been such a negative bitter-Betty of late and I don’t like that about myself.  Complaining may give immediate relief, but it can also leave you with a sour feeling in your stomach.  I also spend many hours a day on the phone with customers and every now and then you get one that you just can’t satisfy – no matter how nice you are or how hard you try to make them happy.  So when they complain, I complain.  :)   I was on the phone this morning with a customer who was complaining about a deck product that was installed two years ago.  Somehow, the warrantied product was failing and it was our fault.  I gave her the correct company’s information and got her on the right track to solving her dilemma, but only after listening to her complain for a very long time.  I needed my “Rox fix”, so I went to www.beachwalks.tv and low and behold was episode #637 (watch it below).  It turned my frown into a smile and instead of my original “complaint” blog post that I had planned, I decided to share her soothing video with you.

I’ve made it my motto now to say “What would Rox do?” before reacting to a stressful situation.  Somewhere, amongst her enormous library of daily beach walks, lies the answer to any of my problems.  Maybe your answers are there, too!  So take a minute each day, visit their site (there’s so much more to see and learn) and bring a little aloha into your life everyday.

In true Rox style, I will end my post by saying “Malama Pono!”

Sometimes home life is an escape from the working world. Sometimes it’s the other way around. Either way we have to have balance like we’re the world’s greatest tightrope walkers. And sometimes, well, all the time, that’s hard to do… Hawaii. There’s someplace I’ve never been. It’s great to see you keep the spirit of your roots alive even while in the big UT. – n.l.

I like how you put that – world’s greatest tightrope. You don’t know how often I feel like that! It’s nice to get away from it all – even if it just means visiting a website. Mahalo for you comments! And DO make it to Hawaii! No other place like it!

*lol* No, but I thought about making myself a WWRD desk figurine that would remind me to mellow-out! A post note will suffice for now. :)

    Dear Kalei,

Sorry to hear about the family turmoil (i’ve had plenty of that). I love it that you find some pleasure in beach walks – I feel so lucky to live hawaii and be able to share it with lovely people like you.

After reading this, I re-tooled how I returned a call to what was essentally a phone spammer from India )with Americanized name and usa phone number.) They’ve been calling at 5 am to sell IT services. I wanted to just unload, but I realized, a) I woke him up when I called! and b) Tom Friedman of the NYTimes has educated me about the terrific work ethic and self-determination of many of our tech support workers in India. It definitely calmed me down, and turned the call into laughter and good luck instead of a rox rant.
